It is unknown whether GLP-1 receptor agonists cause thyroid C-cell tumors, including medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), in humans. These medications are contraindicated in patients with a personal or family history of MTC or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).

Common side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, headache, and injection site reactions. These typically diminish as dosage is gradually escalated.
